Facebook owned Whatsapp messenger is constantly pushing out new updates. While feature updates like dark mode & Netflix integration with PIP are still in testing, Whatsapp started pushing out the much awaited ‘Fingerprint lock’ feature to all it’s users. The feature has been introduced in Whatsapp with the recent update as an additional layer of security for our chats. Now you don’t have to worry about your friends/family reading your personal chats when they borrow your phone for a call/browsing. Follow the below steps to enable fingerprint lock in Whatsapp on android.

How to Setup / Enable fingerprint lock for Whatsapp on android :
- Open Whatsapp application on your android phone & tap on the three dots on the top right corner & then tap on ‘Settings’.
- Now go to ‘Account’ >> ‘Privacy’.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page & you will see the last option as ‘ Fingerprint Lock’.
- By default the option is ‘disabled’. Tap on ‘Fingerprint lock’ and enable the “Unlock with fingerprint” option.
- Once enabled, you will see more options for automatic lock. Choose from the available options to set the duration after which Whatsapp should be automatically locked and prompt for fingerprint.
We have successfully enabled the fingerprint lock for Whatsapp. If you want additional security & chose to hide the contents of the message when they appear in notification bar, then toggle the last option : “Show content in notifications”. Make sure this option is turned off (as show in image above)
‘Better late than never’, Whatsapp finally started focusing on some really useful features. Lock feature is long overdue especially considering users who use stock android mobiles like Android one & Pixel phones. They need to rely on 3rd party apps as stock android doesn’t provide app-lock as inbuilt feature unlike MIUI. These 3rd party apps sometimes fails to provide the expected functionality which is annoying. I’m personally looking forward to see more interesting & privacy related features like self destructing messages, open source API & bot functionality in whatsapp.
