How to Convert Video to Audio using VLC

There can be numerous reasons behind why someone wants to convert a video file to audio / Mp3 which is obviously not the purpose of this post. But I’m certain a lot of people don’t know that they can convert the video files to Audio using VLC & without using any other software.

If you want to extract the audio from videos & save it as an Mp3, VLC comes quite handy. Using VLC media player we can remove the video part of any format & save audio / Music alone. Not just .MP3, VLC supports a wide variety Video to audio conversion formats like MP4 to Mp3 conversion.

Along with Mp3, You can save the audio output to any of the formats like .Ogg,  .ogm, .wav, .raw, .flac .

Convert Video Files to Audio (MP3) using VLC

Follow this step by step guide, To convert a video file into audio file using VLC media player,

  • Open VLC media player on Your Windows PC / Mac / Linux PC.
  • From the Media menu & Select Convert / Save option.

Click on convert & save option

  • Click on Add ; Browse & select the video from which you want to extract the audio (MP3)

Add a video to extract the music from

  • Now Click on Convert / Save button on the bottom of the window.
  • Under “Settings” category make sure “Convert” option is enabled.
  • Choose “Audio – Mp3” profile from the drop down menu.
  • Click on “Browse” & choose a destination & file name for the extracted audio to be saved as Mp3.

Choose the profile and start conversion

  • Once done, Click on “Start” to remove the video part & get only Music.

This makes VLC to start extracting the audio from the given video, In this case VLC Mp4 to MP3 conversion takes place. You can see the status of the conversion process. Once it is done, go to the destination folder which you have chosen before for the converted Mp3 Audio file (output).

One advantage of Mp4 to Mp3 conversion is, The file size will be considerably reduced as we are removing all the video / image parts of the file & saving the audio file alone.
